１９３３年静岡県生まれ。国学院大学文学部卒業。ＮＨＫ入局、「ＮＨＫ紅白歌合戦」で白組のキャプテンをつとめ、しゃれた司会ぶりで人気を博す。歌舞伎通。著書に「歌右衛門の疎開」など。
